Tommy Knockers is a cafe/restaurant in the center of Granity. It’s open from 11am daily all year round and its the perfect place for lunch or a snack after exploring the area.
Granity is a little settlement about thirty minutes North of Cape Foulwind. It originally earned its name by gold prospectors, who referenced the large quantity of granite in the area. Granity boasts spectacular views of the Tasman sea and a wild untamed coastline. However, in more recent years this small settlement has been in a David and Goliath battle with the sea which has been relentless in its erosion of land.
Known for its quaint miners cottages, art and craft galleries; Granity is home to the Northern Buller Museum. It’s also very close to the start of one of my favorite tracks, the Charming Creek Walkway.
Thirty minutes north of Omau Settlers Lodge and en route to Karamea or Historic Denniston, Tommy Knockers is an ideal place to stop for lunch, or a coffee and a snack.
Note: The Cafe is not well sign posted from the road, so be sure to keep an eye out for them on the left-hand side, if you blink you’ll miss them!
A Trip To Denniston & A Stop At Tommy Knockers
My last visit to Tommy Knockers was with my good friend Hannah during our off-season (aka Winter). Personally I think that Tommy Knocker’s interior lacks ambiance in winter, but this is more than made up for by the scrumptious food, friendly attentive staff & management.
The cafe has a shaded outside veranda and seating area, which is extremely well utilized and enjoyed by patrons during the summer months. Being able to sit outside enjoying the sunshine, then taking a leisurely stroll along the beach after your meal is definitely a draw card for Tommy Knockers.
Hannah is a bit of a fitness freak and had to complete a three-hour training run in preparation for an upcoming race.
After Hannah’s big run in the hills of Denniston, I was absolutely famished.
It’s not easy being designated support crew for a friend training for an Ultra Marathon; its taxing stuff I take my role very seriously. Fortunately Hannah had worked up an appetite too – and readily agreed to my suggestion of going to Tommy Knockers for a little snack.
A hot chocolate, the open lamb sandwich and piece of apple shortcake later, I literally rolled out of the cafe; I was so full!
I may not be able to run as far or as fast as Hannah, but I take great pride in the fact that I matched her bite for bite at Tommy Knockers.
Top Picks at Tommy Knockers Cafe;
- Hands down, the Open Lamb Sandwich is the best cafe meal I’ve had EVER.
- The homemade pies and freshly made savory muffins, straight from the oven
- The chef’s daily fish special – it changes frequently and is guaranteed to delight
