The Bay House Cape Foulwind Westport Restaurants NZ

The Bay House Restaurant Cape Foulwind

The Bay House Restaurant and Cafe in nearby Tauranga Bay is nestled among native bush, with a stunning view of the beach and surf from almost every table. The Bay House offers a memorable fine dining experience and seasonal New Zealand style cuisine.

Getting There

The Bay House is located just five minutes drive from Omau Settlers Lodge, making it an ideal place to visit if you have an hour or two to spare.

With prior arrangement (if we’re not too busy) our guests have the option of walking to The Bay House from Omau Settlers Lodge, have a meal, then we will pop down with our car to collect them after their lunch or dinner. It’s a scenic one to two hour walk (depending on how many times you stop to take photos); from Omau Settlers Lodge, along Lighthouse Road to the end, up onto the Cape Foulwind walkway, along Tauranga Bay beach to The Bay House.

Before You Go

The Bay House is a seasonal restaurant, so please check opening times before planning your day. After all, there is nothing worse than completing the Cape Foulwind walkway, only to arrive at The Bay House to find it is closed! The restaurant typically opens from Labour weekend each year, but is not open for lunches and dinners every day. (last year they were closed from Sunday afternoon – reopening on Tuesday for lunch – but it pays to check)

Bookings are essential during the busy season.

Keen to enjoy a fine dining experience, we recently took advantage of a quiet day at the lodge to have lunch The Bay House. We arrived at midday, to find the restaurant was already nearly full. Fortunately we’d taken our own advice and made a booking in advance!

Quickly seated, we were treated to a table inside which had the best view of stunning Tauranga Bay. I could see how easy it would be to while away the hours, sipping on a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, watching the surf rolling in perfectly sets of waves. What a view!

Lee and I shared the homemade bread and dip to start, then I enjoyed the Calamari salad with sesame & ginger dressing, with Japanese seaweed, miso mayo & popcorn salt. Lee had the open steak sandwich with fries which looked delicious, but there was no way he was going to share any of it with me. After our mains we did manage to share some gluten free orange cake with a delicious orangy syrup – it felt very decadent, and a very nice treat after spending the morning cleaning rooms.

The Bay House offer some gluten free and vegetarian options. They do not have an extensive menu, opting for fewer items done really well, using locally sourced in season ingredients. I have since tried their vegetarian eggplant dish which was superb, so I am very confident in recommending The Bay House to anyone who stays with us.

On a sunny day, patrons can enjoy the outside seating areas and stunning waterfront views. But even on an overcast day, The Bay House is one of our hidden treasures at Cape Foulwind, with beautiful food and superb service.
