Star Tavern Cape Foulwind Westport Restaurants NZ

“Arrive as strangers, leave as friends”

Known as New Zealand’s closest pub to Australia, the Star Tavern at Cape Foulwind is the epitome of your friendly rural tavern.

Dishing up a warm welcome, along with generously proportioned grub in its old-fashioned dining room, pool table, table tennis, jukebox and garden bar, it’s no wonder that locals and visitors alike can relax and unwind in such pleasant surroundings.

My personal favourites on the menu are;

  • Turbot (fish), chips & salad
  • Lamb shanks
  • Cheese burger

Their mixed beef nachos are pretty yummy too!

Resident pooch is Governor (fondly referred to as Guv), who can often be found relaxing in front of the open log fire, oblivious to the festivities that might be happening around him. Guv is a Bull Mastiff, weighing about 60kgs. A gentle giant (but still a very good watchdog) Guv enjoys his celebrity status at the pub, in keeping with his formidable size.

The Star Tavern is a special part of Cape history, offering up delicious meals, friendly locals; it’s kiwi hospitality at its best.

  1. Hi Karen,

    Great post. I am an Aussie and it sounds like a great old Aussie bush pub! Haha. Love the menu and the dog adds to the atmosphere.

    My daughter and I are having a weeks holiday in December and land in Christchurch and plan on seeing Queenstown and Milford sound.

    Might have to make a detour and come and say hi 🙂

      Hi Kev, thanks for dropping by 🙂 Did you know that the Star Tavern is the closest Pub in NZ to Australia? Which I guess by default, makes our lodge the closest motel in NZ to Australia as well. If you get a chance to visit the beautiful West Coast during your visit to NZ, we’d love to meet you both! (but book in advance as that’s our busy time of year). All the very best, Kind regards, Karen

  2. Sounds like a great place. Too bad I am thousands of miles away in Pennsylvania, USA.

    Given that Guv is in residence, are the owners receptive to other pooch visitors? I always like places that are dog friendly.

      Hi Stephen, Guv is most definitely king of the pub and given his formidable size, I’m sure he’s a little intimidating for other dogs! He’s very good at just chilling by the fire and visitors love him, as do all the locals, Cheers, Karen
