Portside Bistro Westport Restaurants NZ

Portside Bistro & Bar is an extremely popular restaurant in the heart of Westport; well-supported by locals and visitors alike. It is owned by Matt and Emma, who are passionate about food and have over 30 years experience in the hospitality industry.

Portside is well-known for its Fish & Chip Friday, where you can get a hearty meal and a drink (beer/wine) all for just $20. In fact their signature dish is the Fresh Market Fish, which is cooked with fresh fish delivered to their door straight off the fishing boats which are only two blocks away at the Westport Marina.

Getting There

Portside Bistro & Bar is located 12 minutes drive from Omau Settlers Lodge. Head into Westport, down the main street towards the end and they are on the left; corner of Palmerston & Cobden Streets.

It’s A Great Place To Stop For Coffee Too!

Recently, Lee and I took our bikes into town to explore the new cycle trails and walkways. We parked at the Domain and followed the scenic bike trail through bush along the Buller river then up into the main street of Westport. As it was late morning, I suggested we head into Portside, which has fast become one of my favorite eateries in Westport. After all, we needed coffee and cake to ‘sustain us for the rest of our ride,’ even though we’d biked less than 3kms at that point.

Lee was happy to play along.

Matt, Portside’s owner, looked up in surprise when we walked in.
‘Wow, did you bike all the way in from Cape Foulwind? Very impressive!’

Avoiding eye contact, I busied myself by inspecting the impressive selection of cakes & muffins on offer.

Open most days (except Monday) from mid-morning until late, Portside always have an impressive selection of cabinet food which complements their menu items. I could feel myself salivating as I eyed up the sweet options which included a raspberry chocolate slice, and some delicious looking freshly made muffins.

Those who know me, will understand that I take my self-appointed role as ‘food critic & best places to eat’ extremely seriously. So without further ado, I quickly upgraded our suggested coffee and cake to a full-blown sit down lunch – informing Lee most seriously that at least we’d be able to bike it off afterwards.

I’m proud that I’ve been methodically working my way through Portside’s extensive menu. After all, how can I possibly make recommendations to our guests if I don’t?

Epic Food Photography Fail

All the meals are fabulous, but my personal favorite is their chili salt & pepper calamari on a spiced nut and aioli salad.

Oh and you can’t go past the fish of the day – in addition to their popular battered fish & chips, Portside also offer a baked and grilled option with the recipe changing weekly. Superb!

  1. I am real sorry that this pub is Geographically undesirable due to the fact I live in NW Montana USA. Besides that the pub sounds like a really nice place to enjoy food and friends.

Hi Chappy, What a shame! Well if you ever get a chance to visit NZ, you must make a visit to the beautiful West Coast of the South Island – it truly is an untamed natural wilderness. And yes, the Star Tavern is very good too!! Cheers, Karen

  2. You have made me so hungry! As a fancier of sweets, my head is spinning. Do they ship to the USA? I would even take the partially eaten pie in the picture!

I am also a fan of fresh seafood so it sounds like a perfect place.

Hi Stephen, Haha I don’t think they ship to the US… But perhaps you need to plan a trip to New Zealand – Can we tempt you with cake? All the best and thanks for your comment, cheers, Karen

Hi Tiffany – thanks for your feedback. Yes we are very lucky to have quality restaurants like Portside in Westport, especially given our small population. It certainly makes our interactions with visitors so much better when we can recommend great places to eat, and at a reasonable price too! All the best, Cheers, Karen
