Local Attractions

Westport is a town in the West Coast region of the South Island of New Zealand. Established in 1861, it is the oldest European settlement on the West Coast. Originally named Buller, it is on the right bank and at the mouth of the Buller River, close by the prominent headland of Cape Foulwind. Filled with beautiful scenery, walks and beaches you will find plenty to do in this stunning location

The Old Ghost Road

In the North West corner of the South Island of New Zealand a ghost has awakened.

A long-forgotten gold miners’ road has been revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail – connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north.

The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys.

Cape Foulwind Walkway

A seal colony, a lighthouse and panoramic views of mountains and coastline feature on this spectacular coastal walkway. With the beach close by as well it's a good option for children. It's also one of our best short walks.

Coaltown Museum

The various displays focus on the formation of coal, maritime history, unionism, the communities, transport and the men underground.

It is a colourful and modern museum that brings the past to life and links the past to the present.

On display we have a huge “Q” Wagon used on the world-famous Denniston Incline.

This large 8-ton coal wagon is perched at 450 showing the grade of the steepest part of the Incline.

We also have a 20-ton brake drum used to slow the wagons as they raced down the Incline. A simulated underground mine will give you an insight into the working conditions of the miners.

Mokihinui

Half an hour by car north of Westport. Mokihinui Gentle Annie Beach is a fabulous surfcasting beach on the north side of the Mokihinui River mouth. This really is a delightful wilderness area of mostly unspoilt native bush.

The place is also popular with white-baiters during the season. You can catch snapper, kahawai, rig, conger eel, stingray, gurnard and other species from this steeply shelving beach so try a variety of rigs and baits.

Relaxing and great experience

My third visit to Omau Settlers Lodge - they have all been great. Close to Westport yet far enough out to feel you are off the beaten track. Scenery is stunning every way you look. A great breakfast sets you up for an active day. Will be back and highly recommend.

Excellent hospitality

Hosts are very friendly and helpful. Room was very clean and the shower was the best we ever had in accommodation. Peaceful place with beautiful views. Home made bread and healthy breakfast was served to us.
Would recommend to anyone who visit the west coast to stop there for a night. I think we will visit again.
Thank you for giving us the feeling of home away from our home.
