In the North West corner of the South Island of New Zealand a ghost has awakened.
A long-forgotten gold miners’ road has been revived as a mountain biking and tramping trail – connecting the old dray road in the Lyell (Upper Buller Gorge) to the mighty Mokihinui River in the north.
The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys.

On display we have a huge “Q” Wagon used on the world-famous Denniston Incline.
This large 8-ton coal wagon is perched at 450 showing the grade of the steepest part of the Incline.
We also have a 20-ton brake drum used to slow the wagons as they raced down the Incline. A simulated underground mine will give you an insight into the working conditions of the miners.

This beach provides both first timers with a safe and invigorating environment to learn in as well as providing some world class waves for the more experienced surfers.
We offer lessons for new surfers and coaching for the more advanced levels looking to up their skills in the water.
Half an hour by car north of Westport. Mokihinui Gentle Annie Beach is a fabulous surfcasting beach on the north side of the Mokihinui River mouth. This really is a delightful wilderness area of mostly unspoilt native bush.
The place is also popular with white-baiters during the season. You can catch snapper, kahawai, rig, conger eel, stingray, gurnard and other species from this steeply shelving beach so try a variety of rigs and baits.
